Grand Valley Resettlement Program
Providing support and care for Afghan refugee families transitioning to the United States
Joint Development Associates (JDA) is a Grand Junction-based non-profit focused on humanitarian and community development outreach in Central Asia. Since 2001 JDA has employed Afghans in various provinces in Afghanistan. But after the coalition forces left Afghanistan in August 2021 and the Taliban returned to power, these people went into hiding as their lives were in grave danger. JDA successfully evacuated 568 individuals (former staff members and their families) in October 2021, with the intention of resettling at least seven of these families in the Grand Valley and additional ones residing in the Denver area. After two years, our goal is for each family to be independent and reach social and economic stability.
When Christ teaches us to love our “neighbors,” it sometimes involves crossing over racial, religious, ethnic and political differences. We have a unique opportunity to do just that by welcoming one of the Afghan refugee families brought to the Grand Valley through the efforts of Joint Development Associates International - a local nonprofit that worked in Afghanistan for years.
Some examples of ways to get involved
Simple Acts of Welcome
Pray that all the evacuated families find homes and communities which provide support, acceptance and stability! Provide home furnishings for our “sponsored” Afghan family. Log onto jdainternational.org and click on the spreadsheet that indicates what items are needed (kitchen utensils, health products, towels and bedding, etc).
Donate to JDA
Make a financial donation to JDA International with 100% of the money aiding in the resettlement program for families and their immediate or emerging needs.
More In-Depth Involvement
Offer to serve on the lead support team, which will involve personal contact with MPC's sponsored Afghan family. You may be asked to show them how to shop, fill out a job application, make bank transactions, etc. The GVRP has a dedicated group of volunteers from the valley who are coordinating everything from housing to education to jobs and trauma support, but each of our resettled families need frequent support and contact in the first year. Anyone in direct contact with our family will need a background check and cultural training.
Jesus said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
